Blind spots

Paradise Falls Pixar sketch
Paradise Falls is a metaphorical dream we all have – to do something epic before our time is up.

Blind spots, in the way we organize our home, are common.

What’s not common is being aware of them.

Anxiety is desire without control.

Peace is control without desire.

The price for control? Spend your life honing what’s required to function and what’s required to bring you peace and contentment.

It may be uber-underrated

Everyone calls Glen, “Hop”. Tammy and Hop live here and are gracious hosts. i spent two nights in the office above the front door.

Being organized may be uber-underrated.

Why?

Because many of us have never tasted being decently organized as an adult.

So, focusing on improving is never motivating because we ask, “What’s the point?”

Being in control.

That’s the point.

You’re either in control or you’re not.

Given a choice, the choice is obvious – be decently organized.

Facebook home

Disney Customer Service Keynote Speaker jeff noel
Does your audience care about what you have to say? Can you tailor it to different groups?

Facebook home, aka Facebook personal habits (organization).

Do we really understand how Facebook works?

Do we understand how to manage our settings?

Do we know which people in our connections list want to hear what messages? Do our work friends want to hear about our children, or recipes, our jokes, or the news we feel compelled to share?

Do our lifelong friends want to hear about our work? Do they want to see us marketing our product(s) if we have them?

Do we know how to distribute updates specifically to those people?

Are we discerning when it comes to “Liking” Facebook Pages? Are we intentional or emotional in doing this and do we have so many that we cannot keep up? Are there so many that it fogs our focus on our family and friends?

Do we want to tell the world when we are gone from our home, or when we are home alone? Or would an email, phone call or private FB message be a better choice?

If Facebook went away, do we have a plan B for staying connected? It could happen.

Is being in control an illusion?

College road trips
We were ‘homeless’ for the month of August 1984.

college road trips
Our home was a tent. For real.

Unique honeymoon ideas
Our cross-country hotel was a tent. Here, along a Wyoming Interstate.

Unique honeymoon ideas
We drove from Washington State to Florida in five days.

There is a profound wisdom in keeping things simple and lean.

Life is way too complicated to try and get fancy on looking like you’re in control.

All you need is one percent more to have final say

Be organized enough to know this and deliver on it.

Is there any currency more valuable than time?

All those books that use short cuts and secrets to lure you into buying them.

How have they served you?

The long way is the short cut.

Since retiring from Disney, my “get to do” versus “have to do” percentage has moved from:

51/49 to 95/5

Stunning.

If you ever have a business partner, never go 50/50.

When you disagree, there’s no tie-breaker, there’s stale mate.

But all you need to have controlling interest, and critical decision making authority, is 51%.

Same in life.
