We were genuinely concerned about the fire reaching Apgar

Lake McDonald Fire 2017
The right glow is closer than i remember it last night. Look carefully in the upper middle left and you may notice two light spots – fire on Mt Brown.

Lake McDonald Fire 2017
In a perfect world, we’ll get 5.5 hours sleep. It wasn’t a perfect world last night.

Lake McDonald Fire 2017
The fire on Mt Brown (left side of photo) is raging 11 miles away. The right glow started mildly concerning us.

Lake McDonald Fire 2017
We became mesmerized at the fire trying to breach the ridge (a couple miles away. With high winds coming at us, we agreed to be ready at any time to jump in the car.

Foreground: the two balcony chairs outside our window.

As we retired to our room from a wonderfully relaxing day, and crawled into bed, we watched the fire grow in intensity and wondered if the Canadian cold front winds could push the fire to our hotel before dawn.

We watched the “show” for three hours until 11PM.

At 10PM, we stepped outside to try “one more time” to get a photo that did justice to what we saw with the naked eye.

Panic.

Our door shut and neither one of us had a key.

Lake McDonald’s waves now had white caps crashing the shore and i wore nothing but running shorts.

Unless another Guest invited Howard and i to sleep in their room, i pictured hypothermia.

i also knew we’d miss our 3:45AM drive to the airport.

i witnessed my third “save” in less than a week.
