Experiments take time

Three days, three firsts

12-second video…descending Mt Oberlin after Jody’s first summit here. We are pushing it with a setting Sun, but was confident hiking at dusk with Jody.

It was fun to offer Jody three really decent firsts in Glacier:

First time hiking Reynolds Catwalk
First time hiking to Piegan Pass
First time summiting Mt Oberlin

So far Jody has two Glacier summits under his belt. Honored and humbled to have led him to both.

This year will be challenging to get together. He’s busy. i’m busy. Same thing in 2021 but miraculously it worked out.

Eureka

11-second video…stumbled upon a stromatolite “gold mine”. This side of Piegan Mountain is littered with stromatolites.

Eureka!

According to folklore, when mountain folk found gold, they shouted, “Eureka!”

That’s how it felt to stumble upon this “vein” of stromatolites.

So cool because it was never sought. So cool because Jody knows their prehistoric significance. So cool, finding billion-plus years old fossils.

This 15-second video is the last one before “forcing” myself to stay in the car until i get to the Motel – still a 40 minute drive without stops.

But rather than focus on the mountains and valley, was struck by the breeze gently shaking the brilliant-yellow leaves directly below me.

My second favorite teacher is reading?

Or maybe, reading used to be the second favorite.

Perhaps all these years later, writing is the second favorite teacher.
