Be as prepared as you can be because it’s not a secret

Be as prepared as you can be because it’s not a secret.

What?

Your death.

Johnny and Margie planned and paid for their funerals in 1995, 22 years ago.

For 38 years i watched them gradually shed their belongings.

And this is remarkable because they never were overloaded with things.

Twelve days ago Chapin and i arrived in Allentown to attend Johnny’s Funeral.

He was 91.

His wife Margaret, my Mother-In-Law, went to join him six days later.

Margaret was buried yesterday on a frigid November 11th morning.

She was 94.

She was by Johnny’s side as he breathed his last.

Cheryl and i were by her side as she breathed hers.

We never returned home after “Dad’s” (Pop-Pop to Chapin) burial.

It didn’t make sense and Chapin’s School gave their blessing – even during the final two weeks of the semester.

Cheryl will stay a few more days to manage things.

We are blessed, and reminded, how a lifetime of being decently organized makes end-of-life details easier and lighter – why shouldn’t they be?

Guess what has jumped near the top of my list

Cemetery
We will be back to this exact spot in a few days to rest Margaret next to Johnny. Johnny was laid to rest there less than 48 hours ago.

Guess what has jumped near the top of my list.

Making, and paying for, my funeral arrangements.

Why?

Because i have seen how doing this in advance makes all the other details Family survivors have to deal with so much easier.

Plus, why would any of us wait?

Because we’re scared?

Because we can’t afford it?

Because that’s what our grandparent(s) did to our parent(s)?

Break the chain.

Set the example.

Be a leader.

It comes with a responsibility and a freedom many deny themselves.

The funeral was paid for in 1996

funeral schedule
In two days.

The funeral was paid for in 1996.

Cheryl had (still has) a lot to coordinate, but not having to shop, arrange, and pay for a funeral is a tremendous help.

Is your funeral paid for, arranged with your wishes, and paperwork provided to the likely person(s) who will be responsible for seeing it through?

What’s your rainy day backup plan?

First day of school photo
Ironic that this was captured in this way yesterday.

What’s your rainy day backup plan?

Being organized, why wouldn’t we plan our funeral in advance?

Because:

  • We don’t want to think about death
  • We don’t have time to look that far into the future
  • Plus, it’s a long way off

Is it a long way off?
