We’ve heard it a million times, the one thing we can control is our attitude.
Maybe we’ve heard it so many times, we no longer hear it?
I know of someone who just recently got a new job and it seems all they do is complain. Every time I speak with them and they make a complaint, I am dedicated to point out a positive aspect of them having this new job.
I have not told them they are being consistently negative, nor have I mentioned I am only focusing on the positive. I pray for them that their heart will change (attitude). Also, I may be the only positive they hear in any given day. I can’t quit on them. Hopefully, they won’t quit the new job either.
David, you are a compassionate man to realize you may be the only bright spot of positivity for this person.
Just a thought, some people really need straight talk.
For example, imagine a situation like yours, with the compassionate person pointing out, in no uncertain terms, that they hate the negativity and will eventually pull away – otherwise, it starts to potentially feel like co-dependency.
This is not advice of any sort. Just a recent memory from my own personal experience.
PS. It made our relationship stronger.
I have considered it. For years that was the norm around my family. Cousins, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, . . . . everyone would walk on egg shells for fear of upsetting anyone about certain issues. To me, that kept some things in the dark. Once light was brought in, the issues could be addressed and resolved.
